“I wanna make mistakes.”
A Weekly Conversation: Entry #7
By Contributor Gordy Bravo
It took seven episodes for Kylie to mention anything about her plumped lips. But all it took was one kiss for Kylie to seek out that signature look of hers. We all remember our first kiss: the awkwardness of knowing which way to tilt your head, are we using tongue or no tongue, try not to slobber, and most importantly don’t bump the teeth. However, the boy who first kissed Kylie was a little more concerned about Kylie being a bad kisser, because her lips were too thin.
Yes, what a spark to begin the empire; forcing Kylie to overdraw her lips with lip liner to give the illusion she had fuller lips. Liner soon became a minimal effort as the next step was lip injections, creating the image of Kylie that we all know best. To think, if that boy hadn’t insulted Kylie we may not have had a soon-to-be billionaire mogul.

Well let’s not kid ourselves, Kylie is a Jenner and there was always fame amongst her path. With a mother like Kris Jenner running a tight ship, there is no way you’re children were not going to be someone (mama bear would not let that happen, now would she). Seemingly so, with Kris, anything that her children want they can have, but the way in which they get to the destination isn’t always mutually agreed upon.
Witnessing a business meeting with both Kylie and Kris present, we can see the two bumping heads quite a bit. Kylie still seems to fight to be heard with her mom, even saying, “My mom does tend to take over a lot in my life… it gets frustrating because she doesn’t realize that I got it. I have it under control.” Yet, Kylie is still young and can make decisions that would infuriate any mother (and mom-ager in this particular instance).

Case in point, Kylie is still the youngest of all her siblings and knows how to get away with things; much like asking Kris to pick her up in Miami before heading to Peru, adding 5 hours of travel time to an already exhausting flight. Kris does give a lighthearted lecture but of course she tells Kylie she would make an extra pit stop. Anything for babygirl Kylie – a mothers instinct I suppose – but that doesn’t mean Kris is 100% okay with her daughter’s lifestyle and every choice that she makes.
Kris Jenner has maintained the Kardashian dynasty for more than 15 years (and honestly, it’s extended further than that). She knows exactly what needs to be done for the money to keep flowing – but arguably with the biggest success coming from Kylie – Kris needs to be a little more protective. Kris states that Kylie needs to learn to rein it in sometimes and that she needs to be more conscious about her business while exploring her dating and social life at the same time.

Kris is undoubtedly the HBIC and everyone better be on their best behavior when she’s around. Already 5 hours behind schedule, Kris isn’t in the best mood to head to Peru. And when Jordyn thinks she misplaced her passport the look of annoyance washes over Kris' face, only to be relieved when the passport is actually found. Next stop, Peru!
As soon as the plane touches down, Kris has a great surprise for the two girls: a Michelin star restaurant. One would think that this is within Kylie’s wheelhouse: the elegance, catered meals, five- course meals, but the girl honestly just wants some McDonald’s. Kylie is not here for the mussels and sea snails, potato cooked in ashes, crispy fish scales, nor the yellow cheese and alpaca heart dip. Kylie really is that girl with some simple teenager cravings that she has been trying to portray all season; she just needs some damn spaghetti!

Kylie admits that she isn’t really like anyone in her family and her taste in food easily exemplifies that. “I’m not like my mom or my dad, I’m different,” Kylie admits as she continues to say that she’s a Leo and her parents (and Kendall) are Scorpios and those are two signs that just do not mix; she isn’t afraid to let it be known either.
The ultimate exscape plan goes into action when Kylie says, “So how do we do this?” Slyly asking where the bathroom is, Jordyn and Kylie sneak out of the restaurant and depart in hopes of maybe finding some fries or pizza; every young adults favorite fatty foods.
Food aside, there is a really important reason why Kylie and company are in Peru. During the first year of Kylie Cosmetics, Kylie launched a special-edition lipkit appropriately named “Smile”, where she partnered up with Smile Train: an organization that helps fund surgeries for children born with cleft lips. Kylie has personally had her hands in the mix with Smile Train by creating the #IAmMore campaign, in which 100% of the net proceeds from the lipkits get donated to the organization. “Smile” has only had two limited releases but each were more than successful. The first launched garnered around $159K and the second launch almost doubled that, raking in around $300K for the good cause. Kylie’s efforts have not gone unnoticed, as she is the youngest ambassador in the program, helping fund more than 1,800 surgeries for children with orofacial cleft. (To be a part of this amazing organization and help fight alongside Kylie, please visit the charity at www.smiletrain.org).

The trip to Peru is centered on visiting the hospital that works with Smile Train and goes with meeting the parents and children that have been given the funds to proceed with corrective surgery. The weekend Kylie went, a considerable amount of children were able to have surgeries, 34 to be exact. Kylie, Kris and Jordyn are given the full experience of creating dialogue with these parents, seeing the children in surgery and knowing that it’s because of the humanitarian efforts that these children can continue to blossom without the deformity. The experience gets mama bear emotional as she hugs Kylie and whispers, “It really makes you think twice what our problems are.”
Moving to a debriefing with Kris and Kylie, we witness a very vulnerable moment between the two. Understandably, Kris is worried about her daughter and the enormous company that needs her as a CEO and not as a party girl that is jet setting around the world. Kylie combats her mother’s concern with the fact that she has so much responsibility and when she has a few days off she wants to do things that please her; we’re sure it’s not easy balancing being a teenager and a CEO of a multi-million dollar company. Kylie ends with the sentiment that has been a reoccuring theme this season, stating that she wants to make memories she can look back on when she’s older.
Kylie admits, “I wanna make mistakes.” And that right there gives us who Kylie truly is: a 19 year old girl who happened to be born into American reality royalty, but is still willing to make mistakes and errors so that she can grow as a person. Kris Jenner hits the nail on the head when confessing to her daughter that she doesn’t know any other 19 year old that has their shit together like Kylie; that she is the perfect spokesperson for her generation.
While that statement seems like a stretch, this show in itself promised us one thing from the start: you will see the real Kylie. We are pleased that the promise is undoubtedly starting to gain prominece, so long as you are looking in the right places. There is no denying that as the weeks have progressed we have gotten to see a side of Kylie that had yet to be seen by the masses.
Before the show, Kylie was seen by most as the youngest sister of Kim Kardashian, who was involved in a very weird love square that involved her own brother. A lot of what we still know about Kylie is only from the headlines or the persona Snapchat/Instagram Kylie the world has come to garner. And while people either hate her or love her, at least now we can see a bit more of the authentic Kylie.
We see that she knows how to play the popular media game but understands that she can’t be this “it girl” forever. We see glimpses of the girl who is afraid of getting lost in herself and the empire in which she has created. We see the girl who became a CEO but does all she can to give back to those that solidify career. With just one episode left in the docuseries, we hope that we are left with a fuller feeling of understanding that there is a completely different side of Kylie that is still developing. And if it doesn’t take that final episode to clarify, I’m sure watchers wouldn’t mind a second season to backup the new found understanding of her. Because remember, the Kylie we have come to know, still never rests.
