Lauren Jauregui - Expectations
For someone who doesn’t want any expectations, Lauren Jauregui sure knows how to set the bar pretty high. Her much anticipated solo debut single, Expectations, was released on October 24th, and we’re a little bit obsessed. Lauren’s deep and raspy voice is as beautiful as ever; especially, alongside this soulful and energetic, electric guitar centered progression. Taking a very different direction than her previous role in Fifth Harmony, Jauregui is making a lane of her own in the music world. She truly, is unlike any prominent pop sensation out there today. Her voice transcends the stage, with both her inner talent and her outer political awareness; things that her fans really connect to.
According to an interview with Genius, she wrote the song about her producer-boyfriend, Ty Dolla $ign, and when he didn’t come home after a club performance. He was apparently busy producing with Future, and wasn’t answering the phone, which got Jauregui worried. She sings:
“Up in bed, all alone
Don’t overthink about it girl; we all know, that’s a slippery slope. She continues in the next verse:
“All I need from your side is for you to communicate
After all, good relationships need communication and respect. Luckily, she has since confirmed that Ty was just grinding at the studio and that everything is okay. Shortly following the release, Ty brought out Jauregui to perform the new hit, live. And this woman right here, will give you the chills her voice demands
Jauregui has yet to announce a release date nor a title for her upcoming album; one we can count on hearing, coming in 2019. We do know from social media, that she is in the studio, writing and working very hard. If the rest of the album is going to follow a direction of Expectations, it is going to be a beautiful piece of work. It will also continue to allow Jauregui to stand out from other pop music on the charts right now. Just as it was worth the wait for this single, the upcoming body of work, is also worthy of all our collective impatience.
Normani and Calvin Harris EP:
Checklist feat. Wizkid
EDM legend and mega-hit producer Calvin Harris, teamed up with one of R&Bs most anticipated new solo artists, Normani, for a two track EP. Though, her voice is no newcomer to the game – as she too – came from within the threads of Fifth Harmony.
The first track, Checklist, carries a fast Afro-beat inspired melody, that almost resembles the the feelings of tropical sensations. With the help of Nigerian singer/songwriter Wizkid, the track truly takes on an international tone. The lyrics are about how Normani and Wizkid are really feeling each other; all while, talking each other up. It’s not a very poetic song, yet it is upbeat enough to get you on the dance floor. Normani singing with a slight accent, is something new to appreciate here:
The second track in this mini EP is, Slow Down. This track is only Normani and Harris this time, and sounds more like a typical Calvin radio hit: a pop vocalist, paired with an EDM break, that comes after the chorus. Calculated maybe, but still quite effective. Slow Down focuses more on Normani’s voice than Checklist does, and also lyrically, has more depth to it. She sings again, about a boy who she is into. Unfortunately, the guy she sings for, has also been caught up in a fast-paced and hectic lifestyle. And she wants him to slow down and take some time to get to know her on a more than just explicitly, sexual level.
This EP is another near-solo attempt from a former Fifth Harmony member. Earlier in the year, she also teamed up with Kahlid on Love Lies, which became a huge success, across multiple charts. She has yet to do something that is just her and honestly, that is totally okay. We will wait on it, just as we did with Jauregui. While this EP, Normani X Calvin Harris, captures her strong abilities to stand out as a vocalist, we are very ecstatic to see what she will do on her own. Take your time girl; we’ll bump this until it’s ready!
